Wipeout HD Review

Wipeout HD Review

Sony have released Wipeout HD. You can download it now from the Playstation Network Store for £11.99. Wipeout is the Playstation futuristic racer in which you fly at breakneck speeds racing other hover vehicles around futuristic city tracks.

Graphics & Sound:
The first thing to say about Wipeout is that it has a reputation for being a very fast racing game when on the PSone and the PS2. The PS3 does not disappoint. Even running at 1080p the game looks gorgeous with no signs of torn textures or slow downs. In the top class of vehicle, the game whips along at breath taking speed.  In every aspect of the game it does look great. The sound is also good with some great modern chart and dance tracks on the music list.

Gameplay:
Wipeout HD differs from previous versions with online play via the Playstation Network. This is where I think most people will spend their time. The online multiplayer again just works incredibly well, and even just starting out, you can rank pretty well on races. With some practice (took me about 10 races) you can start to win races. To win races consistantly you need to learn the tracks, and where the weapon pads and turbo pads are. Once you master these you will find yourself much more competative.

The single player game is also varied, with tracks and challenges unlocking, including lap time trials to races. Think Gran Turismo style Licences with cup to be won. There is plenty to get you started here and this is where you can learn alot.

It will take you 5-10 races to learn the weapons which vary from mines, turbos, straight missiles, homing missiles and more.

Overall:
Firstly at only £11.99 this game is a bargain. The online multiplayer is a must and there is plenty in the single player to keep people amused. The game will keep most racing fans happy for a while, however I think the game lacks some longevity the likes of Gran Turismo can offer. I would give Wipeout HD 8/10
