Ea Sports newly released soccer game Fifa 2009 for the Playstation 3 has had its priced slashed by the supermarkets this week. The game was released on Friday 3rd October 2008 with a retail price of £39.99. However a UK supermarket price war has broken out with Tesco slashing the price on release day to £29.97 saving £10, making it the cheapest place to buy it. Reports were that most Tesco sold out of the game in the majority of it’s stores during the weekend.
However on Monday 6th October, Morrisons have followed suit with a price cut of their own with Fifa 09 for the PS3 for sale at £25 saving a heft £15. It is thought that these are loss leader products. This means the supermarkets are selling the games for less than they cost the supermarket to buy them. The reason they do this is by getting the customer coming in to the store and hoping they do their food shopping at the same time redeeming their profit from the food sales.
This is great news for the customer, who can get a newly released game for a bargain price. Lets hope that the trend continues with other big releases on the build up to christmas.
